Craig Schuftans work on The Blow Parade

The Blow Parade is a five-part music documentary series created by Craig
Schuftan, Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen. Each half-hour episode tells
the story of the making of a classic rock album – Lake Deuteronomy’s epic
Spool in the Pits of Prometheus, The Fatcocks’ explosive punk
masterpiece Corgi Scum, and legendary folk singer Egg Zagar’s tragically posthumous
Whale Song.

Never heard of them? That’s because none of these bands or albums
actually exist. They’re fictional creations, hatched in the mind of Chris Taylor.
Their music – which runs the gamut from 70s space-funk to 80s stadium
rock – was single-handedly composed by Taylor’s Chaser comrade Andrew Hansen,
and performed by a crack team of studio musicians – including triple j’s
own Lindsay MacDougal. The voices in the doco – the band members, music
journalists, studio engineers, record company bigwigs, news reporters
and assorted innocent bystanders – were all performed by Taylor, Hansen and
Schuftan. And the whole thing was produced, polished and tweaked to
perfection by Schuftan in the triple j radiophonic workshop.

For Schuftan, the Blow Parade represents the merging of two strands of
work which had previously been quite separate – his day-job as a radio
comedy producer, and his other career as a cultural historian and music
writer. But as anyone who’s ever read The Dirt or seen the Classic
Albums episode on the making of Def Leppard’s Hysteria would know, comedy lurks
not too far below the surface of most music history.

Also last weeks episode is the number 1 podcast in Australia at the
moment.

~STEVEN SCHRAM ON LATEST CAT EMPIRE ALBUM~

Talented and stylish Producer, Steven Schram (Little Birdy/Custom Kings) has just completed work on Cat Empire's fourth studio album 'Cinema', which was recorded at Melbourne's iconic Sing Sing Studios. The title of the album, originally suggested by Schram just sort of stuck with the band. Felix describes the album as "thoughtful; at other times it makes you want to just forget and dance. It's got more sonic depth than what we've recorded before. It's very experimental in parts but it also has some really simple direct chorus; it’s going to be a great album to play live, especially on big stages and at festivals.” The album is due for release June 25 in Australia. June 29 in Canada and the USA, following a month later in Europe.

NEWEST EDITIONS

We are thrilled to announce that broadcaster, author, producer, music fan and pop culture guru Craig Schuftan has joined the roster.

Creator of Triple J’s ‘The Culture Club’, producer of such great radio luminaries as Roy and HG, Robbie, Marieke and The Doctor, Sam Simmons and Space Goat, author of two books, museum curator, DJ and disco philosopher Craig has been changing the way we see art and music since 2001. He has made it his mission to uncover the secret history of modern music in the shadowy corners of the Avant-Garde and the rarefied air of the philosophers and artists. In that time he has successfully proven that Existentialism exists in The Chemical Brothers, that you can find Dada in Beck, John Cage in Bjork, Artaud in The Hives and Autodestructive Art in The Vines. He has also explained the extent of the Romantic movement’s influence on rock and roll since the late sixties and as a result why goths love graveyards, why metal bands put dots over their vowels, and why so many rock singers make that ‘Jesus’ shape onstage.

In late 2009 Craig turned curator helping out on the Powerhouse Museum’s ‘The 80s Are Back’ exhibition, which in turn inspired a new radio series and podcast for triple j, ‘Acceptable in the 80s’. It has also resulted in the zine ‘From a Mess to The Masses’

Craig is currently in demand on the writers and art festival circuit giving lectures you can dance to and dj sets you can learn from. He will be taking his work international in 2010 with a move to the cultural capital of the universe, Berlin.

Not only has Craig Schuftan joined the roster of Catherine Haridy Management but it is with big open arms that we welcome his manager Kirileigh Lynch to the team!  For any information, details and words of love for Craig's books, please contact Kirileigh on Kirileigh [at] catherineharidy [dot] com
