Craig Schuftan: 90's Week on triple j

Posted: June 12, 2012 - 10am - HQ
On a cold winter's night last Thursday, The Tote Hotel in Collingwood played host to the launch of Craig Shuftan's latest book, 'Entertain Us! The Rise and Fall of Alternative Rock in the 90's'. Actually, you would be forgiven for thinking the 90's had come to Collingwood (well, more than usual) with amazing performances of nineties songs from Courtney Barnett, Valentiine, Rich Bradbeer & Jarrad Brown (Eagle & The Worm) Sam Nolan, Sid O'Neil, Planet Love Sound and actual 1990's people such as Kev Mitchell (Jebediah) and Adalita (Magic Dirt). The night was an amazing tribute to the decade that brought us the twin disciplines of Grunge and Nu Metal to name but two, with a retrospective look at the era from author and triple j Culture Club host Craig Schuftan; his new book providing all the insight and context we needed to make sense of it all. We might be all nostalgic and look back on it with fondness, but Craig still maintains "The '90s were a terrible disappointment at the time." Flannel was in abundance, good times were had by all and DJ Steve Parkin spinning the classic (and obscure!) tunes of the times made for a highly entertaining and informative look back on the rise of Alternative music. Check out all the photos here!
If you missed out on the launch night, you can still live the ninties on triple j with their 90's week which is happening right now. Exploring in depth the music, fashion and feelings of the time. From Cobain to Corgan, Brit-Pop to Rap-Metal it's all happening this week! Also be sure to check out Craig's audio series based on the book which you can listen to here.
